Start with the manufacturer's rated capacity for the specific contact condition, then apply an appropriate safety factor (commonly 3:1 for lifting people or overhead loads, 2:1 for lower-risk fixtures). Reduce capacity for thin, rusty, painted, or irregular surfaces and for significant air gaps; consult the product datasheet for correction factors

Inspect face and housing for damage, debris, and corrosion before each use; verify the mechanism (lever, switch, or coil) works smoothly; test holding ability with a known test weight periodically; keep contact surfaces clean and free of paint, scale, and welding spatter, and follow manufacturer service intervals for coil and electrical checks on powered units

Lift magnets can be used for overhead lifting if they are rated and certified for that purpose and if rigging follows applicable safety codes; use appropriate safety factors, redundant attachments when required, and periodic certification/inspection. Do not rely on a magnet alone without following regulatory lifting standards and employer safety procedures

Surface roughness, rust, paint, dirt, and any air gap reduce the magnetic flux and substantially lower holding capacity. Manufacturers typically provide correction charts; removing debris and ensuring full, flat contact maximizes rated capacity
