Use lumens to compare brightness—higher lumens mean more light; for general workshop tasks 3,000–10,000 lumens is common, and 4000–5000K color temperature provides neutral, high-contrast light for detailed work

LEDs are more energy-efficient, have longer rated lifetimes, and reach full brightness instantly, while HID may offer higher initial lumen output for very large spaces; choose LEDs for lower maintenance and better energy savings, and HID if existing fixtures require it

Check fixture socket type and maximum wattage, confirm voltage (120V vs 277V or multi-voltage models), and ensure the bulb supports dimming or any motion/occupancy sensors used in the circuit

Consult the bulb’s rated lifetime (usually in hours) and warranty; LEDs typically last 15,000–50,000 hours, but actual life depends on operating temperature and ventilation, so provide adequate cooling and replace bulbs before end of life to maintain illumination levels

Consider total cost of ownership: higher-priced LEDs often pay back through lower energy use and reduced replacement frequency, so compare purchase price plus expected energy and maintenance costs over the bulb’s rated lifetime

Handle bulbs carefully to avoid breakage; recycle LEDs and HID/fluorescent bulbs per local regulations because they can contain electronic components or small amounts of hazardous materials, and follow manufacturer guidance for disposal
