Load Binders

Choose by load type and chain size: lever binders (over-center) offer fast tensioning for heavy chains, ratchet binders provide finer, safer tension control, and web/cam straps are best for delicate or non-rigid loads. Match the binder's Grade (e.g., Grade 70/80 for transport chains), working load limit (WLL) to your cargo weight, and chain size or strap width specified for your trailer

Select a WLL that exceeds your actual load, considering aggregate securing points; transport chains commonly use Grade 70 or Grade 80 with WLLs calculated per chain/link size. Always follow regulatory or industry guidelines for minimum WLL and use multiple binders or straps to distribute load as required

Ratchet binders are generally safer for controlled tensioning because they reduce the risk of sudden release and allow incremental adjustments; use them when precise tension or frequent adjustments are needed. Lever binders are faster and simpler but carry higher risk of recoil and should be used with caution and proper safety practices

Inspect for bent or cracked handles, worn or twisted hooks, damaged threads, corrosion, and proper function of moving parts; ensure markings (grade, WLL) are legible. Lubricate pivot points as recommended, remove binders from service if any damage or deformation is found, and replace worn chains or straps rather than attempting repairs in the field

Some binders are designed specifically for chains (lever and ratchet chain binders), while others work with synthetic straps (cam straps or ratchet straps). Do not substitute a chain binder on synthetic webbing unless the binder is explicitly rated for that use; always use hardware matched to the securing method and WLL of the strap

Consider safety items such as binder safety clips or retention pins to prevent accidental release, corner protectors to prevent strap abrasion, load-rated hooks or chains that match binder grade, and personal protective equipment like gloves and eye protection. Ensure all accessories have appropriate WLL markings and are compatible with your binder type

Prices vary by type and capacity: basic chain lever or ratchet binders often fall in a moderate range while heavy-duty or specialty binders cost more; web/ratchet strap systems typically range lower than equivalent heavy chain systems. Consider buying to the needed grade and WLL rather than buying solely on price to ensure safety and compliance
