Disposable gowns are typically lighter, used once, and suitable for contamination control, while reusable gowns are made of durable, launderable fabrics that can lower long-term cost but require validated laundering and inspection for integrity after repeated use

Look for gowns with appropriate chest, sleeve length, and back coverage; adjustable closures, elastic or thumb-loop cuffs, and available sizes (S–XL or larger) help ensure full coverage and mobility for different body types and tasks

Follow manufacturer laundering instructions, inspect for seam separation, fabric degradation, or loss of water repellency after each wash, and retire gowns that no longer meet barrier integrity or manufacturer-specified service life

Verify that gowns list relevant standards or test results (AAMI level, ASTM, EN), manufacturer contact information, intended use (medical/isolation), and lot or batch identifiers for traceability

Prices vary by material, protection level, and whether gowns are disposable or reusable; expect a broad range from low-cost bulk disposables under $10 per gown to higher-cost reusable or higher-protection gowns that cost substantially more per unit over their service life
