Plate Casters

Plate casters are wheel assemblies mounted to a flat metal plate and fastened to the underside of equipment or furniture; they are used when you need a secure, load-bearing attachment for carts, workbenches, machines, or industrial equipment where a bolt-on mounting surface is available

Choose wheel material based on load, floor surface, and environment: rubber or polyurethane for quiet rolling and floor protection, nylon or phenolic for hard, smooth floors and higher speeds, and steel for very heavy loads or harsh conditions; also match wheel diameter to obstacles and required rolling resistance

Sum the total weight of the item plus expected payload, then divide by the number of casters and apply a safety margin (commonly 25–50% extra capacity per caster); consider uneven loads and dynamic forces when selecting per-caster rated capacity

Select a plate size and bolt-hole pattern that matches the mounting surface dimensions and provides adequate support for the load; larger plates distribute load better and reduce stress on the mounting surface—verify hole spacing, bolt diameter, and that the receiving material can accept the required fasteners

Use swivel casters at least at the front or back for maneuverability and rigid casters for straight-line tracking; a common approach is two swivel and two rigid to balance ease of steering with stability

Regularly inspect for debris, worn treads, loose fasteners, and damaged bearings; lubricate swivel and wheel bearings as recommended, tighten mounting bolts, and replace wheels or hardware when wear or deformation reduces capacity or function

Prices vary with wheel size, material, load capacity, and bearing type; expect budget options under $50 and heavier-duty or specialty plate casters in higher ranges, with an average around $80 reflecting common mid-duty models
