Select an extension length that reaches the work area without causing excessive flex; common lengths range from a few inches to over a foot. Magnetic extensions hold bits securely for straight drilling and screwdriving, while flexible extensions (or flex shafts) allow access around corners and into confined spots but may reduce torque and control. Choose flexible for complex angles and magnetic/rigid for higher torque and accuracy

Look for hardened steel or chrome-vanadium construction and heat-treated tips to resist wear and twisting. Features like anti-slip hex shanks, reinforced joints, and corrosion-resistant finishes improve longevity under regular use

Use extensions rated for impact use (typically labeled 'impact' or made from tougher alloys) with impact drivers to handle the higher torque and percussive forces. Standard extensions can be used with cordless drills for light-duty tasks but may fail under heavy impact loads

Extensions introduce additional leverage and potential flex, which reduces effective torque at the bit and can decrease accuracy, especially with longer or flexible extensions. Short, rigid, well-made extensions minimize torque loss and maintain better bit control

Secure the workpiece, use appropriate eye protection, keep hands clear of the rotating bit and extension, and avoid excessive side pressure that can bend or break the extension. Inspect for cracks or wear before use and stop if the extension wobbles or slips

Sets provide multiple lengths and compatibility for different tasks and are often more cost-effective for general use; single extensions work if you only need a specific length or specialty type. Expect budget options under $50 and more durable or impact-rated sets at higher price points
