Select a terminal with an inner ring diameter that fits the bolt or stud and an insulated or uninsulated barrel sized for your wire gauge; packaging lists compatible AWG ranges and bolt sizes (e.g., #8, 1/4", 5/16"). Ensure the terminal's material and current rating match your application's requirements

Common materials are copper or brass for conductivity with tin plating for corrosion resistance; stainless steel rings are used for harsher environments. Choose tin-plated copper for general automotive/electrical use and stainless or nickel-plated options where salt, moisture, or high heat are concerns

Use insulated terminals when you need to prevent shorting and provide strain relief; common insulation types are vinyl (PVC) for general use and nylon for higher temperature and abrasion resistance. Uninsulated terminals are appropriate when heat or tight fits are required and insulation is provided by other means

Strip the wire to the recommended length, insert it fully into the barrel, and crimp with a proper ratchet crimper sized to the terminal; for higher-reliability or marine applications, also solder the joint or use heat-shrink with adhesive. Verify the crimp by a pull test and confirm good electrical continuity

Match the terminal to the wire gauge and the circuit's expected current; manufacturers provide ampacity guidance tied to AWG sizes (larger wire and terminals carry higher current). When in doubt, choose a terminal and wire size rated above your circuit's maximum continuous current

Kits that include multiple common sizes can be cost-effective for general maintenance and hobby use, while professionals with defined needs may prefer buying specific sizes in bulk. Evaluate kit size assortment, quantity per size, and material quality against the likelihood of future use

Keep terminals in a dry, temperature-stable place in labeled containers to avoid mixing sizes; handle plated terminals minimally to prevent abrasion of coatings and use dielectric grease on connections in corrosive environments. Regularly inspect stored inventory for signs of tarnish or damaged insulation before use
