Silicone Caulk

Choose by substrate and application: use 100% silicone for glass, metal, and wet areas (showers, aquariums), silicone-latex hybrids for painted surfaces, and high-temperature or specialty formulations for ovens or HVAC; check compatibility with the materials you will seal and whether mold/mildew resistance or paintability is required

Silicone caulk typically comes in 10–11 oz cartridges for standard caulking guns and smaller squeeze tubes; estimate linear feet by dividing bead volume (width × depth × length) into cartridge volume or use a standard 10 oz tube to cover roughly 20–40 linear feet of a 1/4–3/8" bead depending on bead size

Compare cure time, adhesive bond strength, elasticity (percent elongation), temperature and UV resistance, mildew resistance, and whether the product is paintable or solvent-free; faster tack-free and full cure times speed up projects while higher elasticity improves durability on joints that move

Clean and dry surfaces, remove old sealant, degrease with isopropyl alcohol or a recommended cleaner, mask edges for a neat bead, and ensure adequate ventilation when applying; wear gloves and follow manufacturer safety data sheet recommendations for solvents or odors

Properly cured silicone can last years in place; for unused tubes, cap or seal the nozzle, store upright in a cool dry place away from direct sunlight, and use within the manufacturer's recommended shelf life (often 12–24 months) to ensure curing performance

Most 100% silicone is not paintable; use a paintable silicone-latex or a specialized paintable sealant if you need to paint the joint, and always confirm paintability on the product label and allow full cure before painting

Mechanically cut or pry away most cured silicone with a utility knife or caulk remover tool, then soften residues with a commercial silicone remover or isopropyl alcohol followed by gentle scraping; test solvents on an inconspicuous area to avoid surface damage
