Choose length based on typical job size: 12–25 ft for household and small projects, 25–50 ft for construction or landscaping. Pick wider blades (1 in or more) for longer tapes to reduce sag and improve readout stability; narrower blades are more compact for pocket carry

Look for blades made of steel for strength, with protective coatings such as nylon or epoxy to resist rust and abrasion; high-contrast, permanent markings (printed or etched) maintain readability longer under heavy use

A durable, impact-resistant case helps protect the recoil mechanism; a lock that reliably holds the blade prevents slippage during measurement. A recessed or magnetic end hook improves accuracy when measuring against metal surfaces and compensates for hook thickness when taking inside or outside measurements

For jobsite use, prefer models with reinforced housings, shock-absorbing bumpers, a reliable locking mechanism, and blades rated for longer standout (stability when extended) if measuring long spans; rust-resistant coatings and a strong retraction spring also extend service life

Keep the blade clean and dry, retract slowly to protect the hook and spring, avoid dropping the case onto hard surfaces, and store in a dry place; periodically check the end hook and calibration by comparing against a known standard

Convenience features include magnetic hooks, belt clips, reinforced belts or frames, standout-enhanced blades, and specialty markings (fractional, metric, stud marks); these increase usability on specific tasks and typically raise cost compared with basic models

Dual-scale tapes are more versatile for users who work with both systems, while metric-only or imperial-only tapes can be slightly simpler and cheaper; choose based on the units you most frequently use to minimize conversions
