Pick a threshold based on the door function and floor surfaces: saddle thresholds for transitions between different floor heights, ramped or beveled thresholds for smooth wheelchair or stroller access, and adjustable or weatherproof thresholds for exterior doors needing a tight seal

Measure the doorway width at the base, the height difference between floor surfaces, and the thickness of adjacent flooring; note whether the door swings in or out and if there is a sill to accommodate. Buy a threshold slightly shorter than the door width to allow trimming when supported by the manufacturer’s instructions
