Match the U-bolt thread diameter and pitch to the nuts and washers you plan to use, and choose a strength grade (or specified tensile yield) based on the load—higher-grade or larger-diameter U-bolts carry greater tensile and shear loads; consult engineering tables or manufacturer specs for load capacity relative to diameter and material

Common shapes are round (for pipes) and square/formed (for flat or multi-sided components); choose a round bend for cylindrical loads and a square/formed bend where intimate contact with flat surfaces or added stability is needed

Use matching nuts and washers, hand-tighten then apply torque evenly to both nuts in small increments to the manufacturer’s recommended torque if available; avoid over-tightening to prevent thread stripping or crushing the clamped part—use a torque wrench when securing critical or load-bearing assemblies

Periodically inspect for corrosion, cracks, thread damage, and proper tightness; apply anti-seize or corrosion-inhibiting lubricant to threads where appropriate, and replace any U-bolt that shows significant wear, deformation, or pitting

U-bolt prices vary by material, size, and finish—budget options commonly fall under $50 for small carbon-steel or plated U-bolts, while larger or stainless-steel U-bolts cost more; higher prices generally reflect larger diameters, specialty finishes, or corrosion-resistant materials
