Select vinyl based on use: luxury vinyl plank (LVP) or tile (LVT) for high-traffic and water-prone areas, thinner sheet vinyl for utility spaces, and check wear layer thickness (6–20 mil+ for heavier use) plus manufacturer guidance on moisture resistance and subfloor requirements

Common methods are click-lock (floating), glue-down, and adhesive-backed peel-and-stick; choose click-lock for DIY over a level subfloor, glue-down for a more permanent, flatter finish in commercial areas, and peel-and-stick for small or temporary projects

Subfloor must be clean, dry, flat within manufacturer tolerances, and free of debris; concrete may require moisture testing and leveling compound, while wood should be structurally sound and any squeaks or loose boards repaired

Wear layer (measured in mils) determines surface resistance to scratches and scuffs—higher mils suit heavy traffic—and total plank/tile thickness affects feel and stability; both factors raise durability and typically increase price

Sweep or vacuum regularly to remove grit, mop with a manufacturer-recommended pH-neutral cleaner, avoid abrasive tools and excessive water, and use felt pads on furniture to reduce scratches

Vinyl is water-resistant but subfloor moisture can cause problems; perform moisture testing on concrete, use appropriate vapor barriers or recommended adhesives, and avoid installing over severely damp substrates

Consider material price per square foot (options range from budget to premium), underlayment, adhesives or trim, and labor if hiring installers; average category prices can guide budgeting but get quotes based on room size and chosen product
