Web Slings

Select a web sling based on the load weight, required safety factor, lift configuration (vertical, basket, choker), and the sling's rated capacity (WLL). Match the sling's material and width to the load shape and consider edge protection for sharp corners; consult load charts and applicable standards for precise selection

Common web slings are made from polyester or nylon flat woven webbing; polyester resists stretch and is more abrasion- and weather-resistant, while nylon offers greater elasticity and shock absorption. Some slings include reinforced eyes or protective sleeves for added durability

Inspect slings before each use for cuts, fraying, chemical damage, heat discoloration, pulled stitching, and hardware deformation; remove and tag slings that show damage. Store slings away from sunlight, chemicals, and extreme temperatures, and clean per manufacturer guidelines to avoid degrading fibers

Web sling rated capacities vary by width, material, and lift angle; manufacturers provide Working Load Limits (WLL) for vertical, basket, and choker hitches. Typical industry practice uses safety factors (e.g., 5:1) applied to breaking strength, so always use the manufacturer's WLL charts for specific ratings

Use edge protection whenever the load has sharp or abrasive edges, corners, or when the sling will contact rough surfaces; sleeves or edge protectors distribute pressure, prevent cutting, and extend sling life while maintaining rated capacity when used as specified

Web slings can be used outdoors but are affected by UV exposure, moisture, chemicals, and extreme temperatures; prolonged UV or chemical exposure can weaken fibers, so select materials and protective measures appropriate for the environment and inspect slings more frequently

As the lift angle decreases from vertical (i.e., becomes more horizontal), the load on each sling leg increases; manufacturers provide WLL reductions for common angles—using incorrect angles without accounting for increased tension can overload the sling, so consult angle correction charts when configuring multi-leg lifts
