Match bench length and depth to your workspace and the types of projects you do; common widths are 24–30 inches and lengths range from 48–96 inches. Choose a load capacity at least 25–50% higher than the heaviest single load you expect, and prefer benches with reinforced frames or solid tops for heavy-duty use

Solid hardwood tops provide good workability and repairability for woodworking, steel tops offer durability and flatness for metal or heavy tool work, and laminate or MDF tops are cost-effective and resistant to chemicals and stains but less durable under heavy impact

Look for integrated drawers or cabinets for small tools and fasteners, pegboards or backboards for vertical storage, V‑grooves or vise-compatible edges for clamping, and adjustable shelves or casters if you need mobility and customizable layout

Workbench prices commonly range from budget options under $100 to several hundred dollars for heavy-duty or built-in styles; price is driven by top material, frame construction, load capacity, included storage, and brand

Keep the top clean and dry, periodically apply oil or finish to wooden tops to prevent drying and splitting, check and tighten fasteners, protect steel surfaces from rust with paint or a light oil, and replace worn bench dogs or vises as needed

Assembled benches save time and often have stronger joints out of the box, while knockdown benches are easier to transport and may be less expensive; choose assembled for immediate heavy use and knockdown if you need portability or lower shipping costs

Secure the bench to the floor or wall if it will carry heavy loads or resist strong forces, use clamps or vises to hold workpieces, maintain clear work area and proper lighting, and ensure casters are locked if the bench is mobile
